- Bodhi root is not a root, but the hard endosperm of the palm plant Talipot Palm. In addition to being directly made into Buddha beads, Bodhi roots are often carved into various handicrafts. Talipot Palm is native to South Asia and was introduced to China with the popularity of Buddhism. Its main role in Buddhist beliefs is not actually to make beads, but to use its leaves to write Buddhist scriptures - known as Palm-leaf scriptures.
